You may think you have all the safety information and knowledge well understood and are capable of reacting appropriately during an emergency situation, however, there are many safety precautions that still go overlooked – even though they might seem blatantly obvious. Here are some methods and precautions you should always take to ensure safe driving and overall road safety.
Check Your Blind Spots
On May 1, 2022 (northbound I-205 near Clackamas, Oregon), a collision involving a commercial motor vehicle and a car was captured by dash cams in each vehicle. The video shows the two vehicles colliding with each other and the car being dragged along the interstate by the truck. This happened simply because the truck swerved into the next lane without checking blind spots, therefore striking the car. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported.
See the video here:
“A passenger car was slowly passing on the right of the CMV, when the CMV drifted partially into the right lane striking the car. The car ended up spinning and becoming lodged in front of the CMV as it continued down the interstate. The car was pushed sideways for almost a mile before both vehicles came to a stop. The driver of the CMV was not able to see the passenger car as it was on the side and below the driver’s line of sight”, OSP explained.
It’s important to be aware of your surroundings and any vehicles around you before changing lanes or turning corners. Large freighters have more blind spots than the average vehicle so paying extra attention can save any dangerous accidents from occurring.
Mechanical Maintenance
Many components of trucks such as brakes, tires, and other delicate parts require continuous repairs and maintenance when needed. Though the truck driver should be keeping an eye out for anything that may need repairing, management must take all of the necessary procedures to ensure that the risk of preventable road accidents is reduced. The leading causes of road crashes involve blown tires, faulty brakes, suspension issues, and steering issues – which are all usually taken care of by fleet maintenance before it’s time to hit the road.

Climate Conditions
The rainy conditions and seasons that bring a lot of unexpected weather changes have been one of the biggest causes of truck accidents. As the roads become slippery, unskilled, or not adequately trained drivers may lose control of the vehicle resulting in a road accident.
A truck that lacks proper maintenance and care becomes almost undrivable in slippery or icy conditions – meaning the chances of an accident happening dramatically increase under bad conditions (and poor vehicle maintenance). Your company must provide safety precautions for truck drivers under poor weather conditions in order to avoid accidents.
